Holly's TIC project

Journals: 12  Emotions Rating: 3
I have been changing my question on what seems like a daily basis! I know I want to do something with writing and now that I've been learning so much about technology I really want to do something with that. I think I've finally figured out what I want to do...Digital Writing Workshop!  I started reading a book with the same name. I'm inspired! Here's my question (rough draft form!)
What happens when I teach writing using a digital writing workshop?
Sub questions: Do my students write more? What is the level of thinking used with this type of writing, is it more analytical than others writing found in a non-digital writing workshop? Does the amount of writing increase? Is quality impacted?

At this point I really don't know my research plan - other than that I will be using my own three children as guinea pigs for this project!!!
So, I guess what I need is probing questions to help me think about this direction I want to take and or ideas for data collection.
Thanks so much! Can't wait to hear back from some of you!

  1. Wow, Holly, that sounds cool, digital writing workshop! I can't wait to hear more about that. Probing question: How can you collect data with a larger sample other than your own three kids? Will your kids even cooporate with you on this project? Once you are done with this year's TIC project, what do you plan to do with what you've learned?

  2. That does sound cool! I have the same questions. How will you set up your writing workshop and in what situations do you see it being used?

  3. Great questions! Thanks, Treena. Those are both probing questions I will have to think about. My writing workshop will have to be an evening family get together or something if I'm using my kids! How would teachers be able to use what I'm learning? They would have to use their school's computer lab on a frequent basis, I guess. I really don't know.

  4. My students just finished a personal narrative and one of them would go and borrow a laptop from a teacher down the hall. He was so focused and accomplished a lot. I can see that being a really cool thing especially for older students. Wish I had a classroom set.

  5. Hi Holly-
This sounds interesting. I'm wondering what you might find that you need to teach them to help them be successful. It might be a good idea to write down what they needed to know first, so that if another person wanted to try it, they could set the foundation. Hope this makes sense!

  6. Very interesting Holly! I am interested in the results of this project, especially because this year I am fortunate to have 18 computers that I share with another teacher. I do wonder if by using the computer it motivates some of the reluctant writers? I do recommend building a foundation so that your test subjects have the same "base" knowledge when they begin.
